Steven C. Rice has been a civil litigator in Southern California since 1983. He has served as lead or assistant counsel in numerous trials. Mr. Rice received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1980, cum laude, and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis in 1983, graduating in the top one-third of his class. He is rated av by the Martindale-Hubbell directory. Mr. Rice is an experienced trial lawyer, handling numerous jury trials to verdict. Several of his trials have resulted in his clients recovering more than a million dollars. He has also successfully represented defendants in lawsuits where plaintiffs sought millions of dollars in damages. He has served as lead appellate counsel in a number of complex matters, handling briefing and oral argument.
Mr. Rice's cases involve many areas of civil litigation. He has been designated by other attorneys as an expert witness in the fields of insurance defense and civil litigation. His practice includes matters relating to tort and contract law, class actions, landlord-tenant disputes, premises and product liability, professional negligence and malpractice, broker/lender law (including HUD and DRE audits and compliance issues), police and security liability, fire cause litigation, construction litigation, mechanics' liens, zoning and condemnation, boating accidents, aviation and maritime law, employment litigation (Title VII, DFEH, EEOC, sexual harassment, discrimination complaints), civil rights litigation, land subsidence and boundary disputes, unfair trade and business torts, and punitive damage issues.
Mr. Rice has served as a discovery referee, and as a judge pro tem in the Long Beach Municipal Court (traffic and small claims). He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is also a member of the Long Beach Bar Association, and has served as chairman of its membership and legislative committees. He is authorized to practice in all state and federal courts in California, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. the American Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
